Disaster Recovery & Urban Flooding

Light Up Lawndale also plays a vital role in raising awareness and supporting City, County, State, and Federal FEMA disaster assistance and recovery efforts for urban flood assistance. We got our start with the torrential urban flooding that affected residents on Chicago’s West Side in July 2023 and again on the South Side in September 2023, and we are part of a coalition for Illinois.

We are continuing to see many homes suffer severe urban water damage, with families facing significant losses, from structural damage to the destruction of personal belongings. Through these events, we aim to connect affected survivors (residents) with valuable City, County, State, and Federal FEMA resources and assistance programs designed to help rebuild and restore their homes. Light Up Lawndale will feature information stations where residents can learn about available aid, the application process, and how to access the funds needed to repair flood damage. Together, as a community, we’ll support each other as we rebuild stronger bonds.

We have assisted those affected by the 2023 flooding through Disaster Case Management and boots-on-the-ground efforts, using resources both locally and nationally. We have connected with 3,096 survivors. We have served 1006 survivors by connecting them with resources such as furniture, basic household needs, disaster trauma mental health counseling, support groups, and, in some cases, help navigating newly implemented programs to repair their homes.
